Steve Martin likes to have an audience on his side, and nowhere is that more evident than in this personally scripted drama, updated from George Eliot's Silas Marner. Martin plays a reclusive cabinet-maker who ?adopts? the illegitimate toddler of local magnate Gabriel Byrne when the child's mother dies in the snow near his isolated home. The Victorian poignancy of the tale still grips, even in modern-day dress, but Martin unfortunately comes across as a bit of a wimp. The charm that seemed to flow effortlessly in Martin's earlier update, Roxanne, is not very evident here, though the end result is still very watchable.
Halliwell's Film Guide - A not entirely successful attempt to make the plot of Eliot's Victorian novel work in a modern setting, but it has its moments.
